The Department of Lands has 11 upskilled additions to its workforce, thanks to TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute’s customised Spatial Information Services training program. The recent graduation of 11 students marks a three-year long partnership between the NSW Department of Lands and Sydney Institute.
According to Grant Kilpatrick, Head Teacher of Surveying and Spatial Information Services, Sydney Institute, the program was an innovative combination of customised training and recognition of competencies and training already developed on the job.
‘Working with the Department of Lands we were able to identify specific training needs and develop a customised training program leading to the Certificate III in Spatial Information Services qualification,’ Mr Kilpatrick said.
‘As well as undertaking study at TAFE NSW, Department of Lands staff also completed training in the workplace. Using Recognition of Prior Learning, we were able to formally recognise existing skills and give credit towards the qualification,’ he said.

‘The training was also structured so that if any of the students wished to continue studying they would receive full credit for their training into the Diploma of Spatial Information Services.’
Des Mooney, Deputy Director-General, Department of Lands said the ongoing partnership means a more skilled and able workforce for the organisation.
‘On completion of their training our staff are able to collect, maintain, store and retrieve data related to spatial information services and potentially move into other positions in different areas of the organisation.’
‘We found it of great benefit to have a customised training program developed for our needs. This meant that our staff received training in the areas that we identified and the result was time and cost-effective for our organisation,’ Mr Mooney said.
