TAFE NSW is training hundreds of Defence employees from the largest project management organisation in Australia.
TAFE NSW and Deakin Prime (part of Deakin University) have an exclusive three year contract to deliver project management training to the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) and other Defence personnel.
Heather Roberts, Client Relations Manager, Sydney Institute, said the DMO had some very specific training requirements. TAFE NSW developed tailor-made resources and provided delivery and assessment options in response to those requirements.
Some 13 Diploma of Project Management courses have been delivered to more than 200 project managers within the DMO and over 65 have already graduated. Around 23 Fundamentals of Project Management courses at Certificate IV level have been completed by more than 300 project team members.
Grace Franco, Director, DMO Institute, said TAFE NSW was selected for its ability to customise the Diploma to the DMO environment.

‘TAFE NSW was able to capture the nature of project management in the DMO and reflect these practices in the Diploma,’ Ms Franco said. ‘DMO project managers require training that is relevant and accessible as often project schedules do not allow project managers to attend lengthy training programs.’
The Certificate IV is suitable for employees working in project teams and/or managing simple projects. The Diploma is aimed at project managers who oversee complex projects. Course content covers project integration processes, scope, time, costs, quality, human resources, communications, risk and procurement. Students take part in a five-day workshop and then have up to six months of mentoring and coaching to complete a work-based project or portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competency.
Mark Stevenson, Deputy Project Director, Tactical Unmanned Ariel Vehicle Project, DMO, has recently completed his Diploma. ‘I had always wanted to do the course as part of my professional development,’ he said. ‘It opens up promotion opportunities within Defence itself and the national qualification provides recognition amongst my peers in the Defence industry.’
The courses are endorsed by the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) and graduates can become Registered Project Managers.
