Training boosts border security

Training by TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute for the Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS) is helping prevent security breaches at the country's gateways. Twenty-six DOTARS staff have completed the Diploma of Business (Quality Auditing), with Inspectors learning how to initiate, prepare and lead quality systems audits, report findings and assess risk.

Q:

Need a skilled workforce to minimise security risks?

A:

Look to TAFE NSW for industry related training.

Adam Rosalky, Operations Support Analyst at DOTARS Office of Transport Security NSW, said TAFE NSW was chosen because it could provide a course that met DOTARS’ training needs in an efficient and flexible format.

He said the training has given inspectors the skills and confidence to engage with the transport security industry and manage a professional and consistent audit program.

‘This in turn helps us build stronger relationships with industry to work more effectively with them to minimise security risks at our airports and seaports,’ Mr Rosalky said.

‘It has also provided professional and personal development to the staff, both in their current roles and future careers, and our inspectors are more skilled and better qualified, which has increased efficiency and morale in the office.’

Geoffrey Smith, Transport Security Inspector, DOTARS, said the course built on his existing skills and also provided new ones.

‘Since completing this Diploma course I feel more confident conducting audits and the overall quality of my audit reports has been enhanced,’ Mr Smith said.

Elaine Burdon is also a Transport Security Inspector and echoed Mr Smith's comments.

‘The easy-to-use training tool taught in the course has really improved the way I approach the various audits within my area,’ she said. ‘I would strongly recommend the course to anyone who wants to better their potential and who would like to strive to stand out in their chosen career.’

Irene Simatos from Sydney Institute’s St George College ran the course for DOTARS. She said the success of the Sydney-based course had led DOTARS to extend the training to around 30 employees in Brisbane. She added there were now learning and teaching resources available to run the course for any other commercial client.

Keeping tabs on security risks is becoming increasingly important to ensure border security at ports and airports.
