Customer service standards guaranteed

TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute is helping to position the tourist region of Port Stephens as one of the leading customer service areas in NSW.

In November and December 2007 the Institute’s Tourism and Hospitality Faculty delivered its Service Plus training course.

The course was delivered in collaboration with Shoal Bay Resort and Spa, and the Department of State and Regional Development and will be offered again in 2008.

Melissa Baker, Human Resources Manager, Shoal Bay Resort and Spa, said the training allows hospitality and retail businesses in Port Stephens to develop a regional customer service standard of the highest quality.

‘The region is a key tourist destination with a strong service-based culture which is developing to its full potential through the Service Plus course offered by Hunter Institute,’ Ms Baker said. ‘The course is ideal for the region as it is specific to our individual requirements and has training customised for frontline staff, supervisors and managers.’

The course addresses the importance of customer service on the growth and development of businesses, key elements of outstanding customer service delivery, the importance of local knowledge, respect and confidence, the ability to read customers and the development of a sustainable service culture.

One student, Brook Hamilton, said the training has been very beneficial to her in her work.

‘The training session gave me valuable lessons on how small changes go a long way to creating big differences for customers,’ Ms Hamilton said.

Shoal Bay Resort and Spa has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hunter Institute to develop the existing partnership and continue to build a world-class learning and training culture within the organisation and the Port Stephens community.

Lisa Maclure, Tourism and Hospitality Commercial Manager, Hunter Institute, said the Service Plus course has been very well received by industry. Participants who complete the course gain a TAFE PLUS Statement.
