In response to strict regulations governing air safety, TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute and TAFE NSW – National Business have been working closely with Qantas Defence Services (QDS) to develop and deliver a training program for QDS employees.
Over a six month period in 2007, 151 employees undertook recognition and gap training to achieve their Certificates in Aviation. A graduation was held at Richmond Airbase in November for the first group of 57 QDS employees. The range of qualifications received by QDS staff encompassed avionics, structural and mechanical skills required for the aviation industry.
Mr Gerry Roberts, a program manager with QDS, said the collaborative partnership with TAFE NSW has provided QDS with a comprehensive and accurate view of workforce qualifications in light of current Australian Defence Force maintenance and airworthiness requirements.
‘In addition, by supporting those employees who required additional training to fully comply in their trade skills, QDS has generated a more flexible workforce and motivated employees,’ Mr Roberts said.
Francesca Saccaro, Director, National Business, said it was fantastic to see the level of commitment and enthusiasm for the program from everyone involved, including QDS staff, TAFE NSW teachers and the management of both organisations. ‘It is a truly collaborative arrangement,’ she said.

TAFE NSW offers workforce development training. |
National Business and South Western Sydney Institute have developed delivery options for QDS, which maintains aircraft and avionics for a number of major clients including Qantas and the Royal Australian Air Force. These options cover traineeships, workplace-based training, and recognition and gap training. This flexibility allows employees to have their current skills recognised and develop the new skills needed in this fast-changing industry.
Dennis Owen, Manager Client Relations, National Business said that as a result of the initiative with QDS the Institute has developed Aerostart, a training program for people wanting to enter the aviation industry.
‘This is a new training approach which allows potential employees to undergo an up-front training program to develop underpinning knowledge and skills prior to an on-the-job apprenticeship,’ Mr Owen said.
Aerostart will form the basis of TAFE NSW’s future training delivery for the aerospace sector and will be rolled out across the general and commercial aviation sectors.
