Practical program reduces risky business

A course devised by TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute and Prudentia, a specialised risk management service provider, is the cornerstone of an award-winning NSW Department of Commerce learning and development initiative.

The course, Applying Risk Management Processes, is suited to any person responsible for identifying and managing risk in their organisation. It introduces the fundamentals of risk management and provides practical experience in applying risk management theory.

Around 200 employees at the NSW Department of Commerce have studied the two-day course as part of the Department’s Risk Management Learning and Development Program.

Q:

Want to manage the risks in your business?

A:

TAFE NSW risk management training may be the solution.

Marcus Turner, Manager, Corporate Risk, NSW Department of Commerce at the time said TAFE NSW was selected to provide training because it could customise the course and modify it on an ongoing basis.

‘The flexibility TAFE NSW was able to provide when delivering the course was a significant factor in achieving the department’s business objectives,’ Mr Turner said. ‘The course in its customised form has been an important contributor to the implementation of operational risk management across the organisation.’

Prudentia director Roy Hilson said the NSW Department of Commerce had selected the course because it offered the expertise of a nationally-recognised training provider and a market-leading private sector risk management organisation. He said TAFE NSW was a very good partner for Prudentia to link with.

Blake Burningham from the National Business Unit at Sydney Institute said Prudentia was a reputable risk management specialist with extensive experience. The company had developed effective resource materials designed to train people in identifying and understanding risk management.

TAFE NSW and Prudentia have also delivered the course to employees in other organisations including the NSW Department of Health, NSW Police, Department of Defence, Alliance of NSW Division of General Practitioners and the University of Newcastle.

Participants receive a Statement of Attainment in Applying Risk Management Processes. The course, which is accredited by Sydney Institute and is based on the Australian Risk Management Standard (AS4360), is applicable in an Australian context as well as internationally. Participants can also gain advanced standing towards a Certificate IV qualification.

Companies can safeguard themselves against risk by ensuring staff are aware of the issues and are able to manage them.
