Tailored training manages to reduce risk for local government

A course devised by TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute and Prudentia, a specialised risk management service provider, has provided opportunities for regional Councils in NSW to participate in a leading-edge learning and development initiative.

The course aims to provide individuals and organisations with knowledge and skills relating to the fundamentals of risk management. It also covers all the requirements for participants to develop and roll-out an Enterprise-wide Risk Management framework. Some 20 people from the Central West Region of Councils (Centroc) completed face-to-face training onsite.

Q:

Does your organisation need to manage risk better?

A:

TAFE NSW provides tailored risk - management training solutions.

Sonia Rudd, Regional Learning and Development Manager, Centroc, saw an opportunity for an innovative program and turned to Sydney Institute for assistance.

‘Through the NSW Department of Local Government Review promoting the better governance of Councils, we identified a need to address the issues of risk management. I saw the opportunity to introduce the program across the Councils. Rather than bring in a consultant, I wanted the Councils to have ownership of the document by having them produce the manual,’ Ms Rudd said.

A group of trainees developed a risk management manual for Centroc that can be tailored for individual councils. Prudentia’s Roy Hilson was impressed with their enthusiasm and believes the model could be used for other regional council groupings and for individual councils.

‘Prudentia and Sydney Institute delivered a number of sessions including two assessments, and the outcome was very successful,’ Mr Hilson said.

The program was delivered as two components: the Introduction to the Fundamentals of Risk Management and Enterprise Risk Management.

Course attendees completed assessments, which entitle them to a Statement of Attainment at a Certificate IV level for completing the Fundamentals in Risk Management component. They also receive a Transcript of Results at Diploma level for completing the Enterprise Risk Management component of the program.
